The ARS-manufactured Orca™ cooler is a mixed refrigerant Joule Thompson cooler. The Orca uses a unique cooling cycle to maintain temperatures of 90 K (-183.15 C) without the use of liquid cryogens.

The Orca system is a low cost alternative to cumbersome liquid nitrogen systems that require constant maintenance. The robust design has no moving parts in the cold head. Only the compressor requires regular 10,000-hour maintenance. The compressor is air cooled and operates at either 115 V or 208 V.
